Jim Donaldson: Patriots' Amendola, filling big shoes, hangs tough in opener - The Providence Journal

Posted on 8:28 PM by Unknown

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y — For a little guy, Wes Welker left some huge shoes to fill in New England.

For six seasons, he was Tom Brady’s “go-to” guy. When the Patriots needed a first down, a clutch catch, somebody to move the chains, Welker was often Option Number One.

In five of the six years he was a Patriot, Welker caught at least 111 passes. He set a team record for receptions with 123 in 2009 and had 122 in 2011.

Then, Thursday night in Denver, in his first game with the Broncos, he had nine catches, two of them for touchdowns.

Talk about tough acts to follow.

It would be easier to sing after Sinatra, or for an understudy to step in for James Earl Jones in a Broadway play.

That was the situation Danny Amendola found himself in Sunday afternoon against the Bills.

He was playing Welker’s position of slot receiver, but he was the center of attention.

Everyone in New England was watching him, wondering if he really could replace the wildly popular — and highly productive — Welker.

So it was troubling when, late in the first half, after catching three passes for 40 yards, Amendola limped off the field in obvious discomfort with what appeared to be a strained groin muscle.

Talk about a worst-case scenario.

Amendola came to New England with a reputation of being injury prone.

He played in only one game for the Rams in 2011 because of a dislocated elbow and sat out five games for St. Louis last season because of shoulder and ankle injuries.

No one ever questioned Amendola’s productivity. His durability, however, was another matter entirely — particularly when compared with Welker, who would take a licking and keep on playing, missing just three games in his six seasons with the Pats.

So it was significant that, after getting treatment at halftime, Amendola came out in the second half and made some Welker-like plays that helped the Patriots avoid what would have been an embarrassing loss.

In the end, the game came down not to Stephen Gostkowski’s foot but to Amendola’s hands.

With just 1:20 remaining, the Patriots were trailing, 21-20, and facing a 3rd-and-8 situation at the Buffalo 39 — still out of realistic range for a field goal.

That’s when Amendola darted over the middle and made a surehanded grab of a rifled pass from Tom Brady for a first down at the 29.

It was his fourth catch of the desperation drive, and when Shane Vereen followed it with a 15-yard run to the Bills’ 14 on the next play, the Patriots were able to pull out the win on a 35-yard field goal by Gostkowski.

“Danny stepped up,” Belichick said. “He made some big catches in some tough situations.”

Brady spoke similarly of Amendola.

“He really toughed it out, which was pretty impressive,” the quarterback said. “I thought he was going to be out the rest of the game. He gave everything he’s got.”

Amendola showed something Sunday to Patriots fans.

He stayed in the game, and then did as much as any Pats player to win the game.

Targeted 14 times by Brady, he finished with game-high totals of 10 catches for 104 yards.

Afterward, in the crowded visitors locker room, Amendola pointed out that this isn’t the first time he’s followed in Welker’s footsteps.

“I was a senior in high school, and going to Texas Tech, when Wes Welker was there and catching 15 balls a game,” he said. “He’s one of the most productive players ever.”

As a senior at Texas Tech in 2003, Welker caught 97 passes for 1,099 yards. When Amendola was a senior, in 2007, he caught 109 for 1,245 for the Red Raiders.

That’s not to say he’s going to surpass the phenomenal numbers Welker put up in New England. That borders on the impossible. But, if he can avoid injury, Amendola should compile some pretty healthy stats.

“I don’t think about that stuff,” Amendola said when asked about the inevitable comparisons with Welker, and the pressure of trying to replace him — both on the field and in the hearts of Patriots fans.

“I just think about my job. I’m really excited to be here. I love playing with these guys.”

In the first half, he said, “I really didn’t have my legs under me.”

And, when he limped off the field, it seemed as if he might not be running at all in the second half.

“We have some good trainers here,” was Amendola’s tight-lipped explanation for how he was able to keep playing.

“It’s a long game, a physical game,” he said. “You’ve just got to keep fighting.”

After the game, Amendola was feeling no pain.

“Right now,” he said, “I feel good about winning.”

Serena Williams' shoes have custom US Open hearts - Larry Brown Sports

Serena Williams’ shoes have custom US Open hearts

By Larry Brown September 6, 2013 - Posted in Fashion, Tennis[1] [2]

Serena Williams US Open shoes

Nike created some customized shoes for Serena Williams to wear at this year’s US Open. The shoes have four hearts on the side to note the times Williams won the grand slam event, and each heart has the year she won the tournament etched into it — 1999, 2002, 2008, and 2012.

Williams looks like she’ll claim her fifth US Open and 17th major title with the way she’s been rolling.

This actually is something pretty common for Nike to do for its top tennis players. Two years ago, Roger Federer had special Australian Open shoes[3] that had Swiss flags on them.

Store Front Roundup: Running shoes delivered, yoga and bagels - Syracuse.com (blog)

Posted on 9:29 AM by Unknown

DEWITT, N.Y. - Fleet Feet Sports, which already announced a second location and an expanded product line this summer, has another new feature in store for its fans.

The shop, named the best running store in America last year by Competitor and Running Insight magazines, is adding free shipping on replacement shoes.

Running shoes typically wear out in four to six months if worn daily, said Liz Knickerbocker, marketing manager at Fleet Feet. The store's customers can now have replacement shoes shipped for free in two days by filling out an online form.

Some customers come to Fleet Feet's DeWitt store from as far away as two hours, Knickerbocker said. Delivery will give them an easy way to stay updated with the latest shoes.

More details are available on Fleet Feet's website[1] .

The store plans to open[2] its second location near Great Northern Mall in Clay later this year and added some casual footwear options to its lineup earlier this summer.

- The much-anticipated (and[3] written[4] about[5] ) arrival of lululemon in downtown Syracuse is nearly here. The chain's local showroom will celebrate its grand opening Aug. 22, according to its Facebook page.

The party will kick off at 9:30 a.m. with a yoga class in Clinton Square. Snacks and music will follow at the store, located at 327 W. Fayette St.

That's across from downtown's new Marriott hotel complex. Lululemon[6] sells yoga-inspired athletic apparel.

- The franchisee for the Syracuse area's Bruegger's Bagels locations is looking to add a new store in the Fairmount area.

Rochester-based Flour City Bagels, which owns 33 Bruegger's[7] in Syracuse, Albany and Rochester, is looking for a location now, CEO Ken Greene said.

The company is also exploring some new concepts at its home base in Rochester that could eventually find their way east, Greene added. A new restaurant from Flour City called Brioche Doree will open at Greater Rochester International Airport by Labor Day.

Brioche Doree is a French bakery and cafe chain.

Greene said he's also in talks with a specialty coffee house on a combination location with Bruegger's in the Rochester market. That setup could eventually spread to local Bruegger's locations like the ones on Erie Boulevard and Nottingham Road, Greene said.

Flexpoint and Bend Tech Announce Funding for Sports Shoe Development - MarketWatch (press release)

Posted on 5:28 AM by Unknown

DRAPER, Utah, Sept. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. - Sports Division /quotes/zigman/342781/quotes/nls/flxt FLXT +4.36%[1] , (http://www.flexpoint.com/) and Bend Tech, LLC, today announced that they have received funding for the development of a "Smart Shoe" that shows real time data and has the ability to collect data for future training and comparisons. Flexpoint in conjunction with Bend Tech has developed a shoe that can communicate with smart phones and other wireless devices to give real time analysis showing balance, performance and other pertinent data relating to performance of the individual.

"In the past, we have made successful demonstrations to major golf equipment and shoe manufacturers. Recent advances in electronics and miniaturization of electronic components available have allowed us improve and reintroduce this cutting edge product. Golf will be the first targeted industry, but successful entry into this segment opens a number of other areas for development as this technology transfers to many other sports and recreational activities. These activities have millions of enthusiasts, spending billions of dollars annually who are looking for improvements to their individual performance. We believe that these new products will offer inexpensive technology for that purpose. The products have generated enthusiastic response each time they have been discussed with individuals within the selected industries. With millions of potential customers and the feedback we are receiving from the marketplace, I believe this product could easily achieve millions of dollars in annual sales," stated Bend Tech Manager, Tony DeGreef.

Representatives of Bend Tech are currently involved in ongoing discussions and negotiations with several major equipment manufacturers and distributors. The Company anticipates that development of the product could be completed and the product brought to market by the middle of next year.

"We are pleased to be moving forward with this project, it continues to gain momentum," said Flexpoint CEO Clark Mower. "The next step will be to build advanced prototypes for demonstration purposes and then take the shoe to various manufacturers to work out either a manufacturing agreement or a licensing agreement for production of the shoe and related electronics. We will have fully upgraded electronics and visual displays as we prepare for the PGA merchandise show January 21-24 in Orlando, Florida. We anticipate entering into development and production agreements after this show."

In conjunction with the shoe, Flexpoint and Bend Tech are also working on other products, such as sensors for golf clubs that will give other useful and related information. The sensor and technology have been used for running and bowling shoes and are adaptable to bowling gloves and golf club shafts. The products will be used to help measure and improve an individual's performance. Several prototypes of the shoes and golf club shafts have already been completed and demonstrated to major equipment manufacturers.

Stallworth has big shoes to fill for UC - Daily Mail - Charleston

Posted on 7:28 PM by Unknown

By RICH STEVENS

DAILY MAIL ASSISTANT SPORTS EDITOR

When it comes to replacing an all-West Virginia Conference performer and a free agent signing of the Kansas City Chiefs, University of Charleston running back C.J. Stallworth knows he doesn't have to carry the load, just some of it.

Then again, he's more than prepared to do what's necessary.

The junior and the Golden Eagles will open the 2013 season in the newly minted Mountain East Conference at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Shaw University at Durham County Memorial Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.

It's likely a committee of backs will be called upon to replace the production from former star Jordan Roberts, who was signed as an NFL free agent by the Chiefs, but recently released.

The other guy expected to share the load is senior Leighton Settle, a transfer from Mid-American Conference member Northern Illinois.

It's likely that Stallworth will lead the way after adding 15 pounds of muscle and the desire to finish runs.

"I'd say I would carry the ball, probably, 20 times a game," said Stallworth, who averaged 3.3 carries a game last year and just eight per contest in high school at Orange Park (Fla.).

The addition of 15 pounds of muscle to his 5-foot, 10-inch frame has given Stallworth just the right amount of bulk without diminishing his speed while working out with a trainer and his high school head coach, Craig Nosse.

"I also ran every day," Stallworth said. "Once I lifted I knew I had to run to be able to hold the weight. I feel, physically, I'm in shape and I have the right amount of weight on me to handle such a load. I feel comfortable doing so."

Last season his opportunities were limited behind Roberts, who had 238 carries (21.6 per game), and backup quarterback John Knox, who had 84 in 11 games, and starting QB Maurice Leak, who was credited with 56 carries.

Westborough boys holding kids' footwear drive - Community Advocate

Westborough – Although they are still young, Westborough High School students Kyle Vaccaro, 16, and Johnny Kelley, 14, know the cost of participating in youth sports can be prohibitive. That is why the two boys are now holding a used kids’ footwear drive to help assist local families.

The two are asking the public from now until Sept. 21 to consider donating gently used sneakers, shoes, and cleats that would be appropriate for ages pre-school through high school. Anyone interested may drop off their donations in collection boxes in the Roche Bros. store located at the Bay State Common and at the Walmart store, 200 Otis St., (Route 9) on the Northborough/Westborough line.

It was actually Kyle’s brother, Sean, who is now a freshman at Emerson College, who first came up with the idea of a sports shoe collection last year. The boys were at a soccer store in Acton, Kyle said, and saw a sign asking for used cleats and other types of sports shoes.

“We thought that was a great idea because we knew how expensive it can be to be in a sport, especially with shoes and other fees,” Kyle said.

So with Sean leading the project and Kyle as his assistant, the boys decided to organize a drive in Westborough. They collected approximately 100 pairs of sports shoes, which were then displayed at the Forbes Municipal Building. Families were able to come in and select shoes.

“It was totally anonymous,” Kyle said. “We didn’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable so we weren’t even there.”

The decision was made this year to expand the program to include all types of shoes.

“There was high demand for running shoes last year because those are ones you can wear all the time,” Kyle explained. “And kids outgrow shoes a lot.”

The plan, the boys said, is for Johnny to take over the drive in two years and then have his younger brother Patrick, who is now in sixth grade, continue when he reaches high school.

“I really wanted to be able to help make a difference,” Johnny added, “and help kids in need.”

Shoes that were not claimed last year were packaged up and donated to organizations that help third world countries, Kyle said.

“But this year we hope we can help other local communities and donate them to places in Framingham or Worcester,” he added.

Distribution of the footwear this year will take place at the St. Luke’s Parish Hall, 1 Ruggles St. the morning of Saturday, Sept. 28. Once again, recipients will be able to choose their selections in an anonymous manner. For more details, email jvaccaro430@netscape.net[1] .

Shoes and your feet: 101 - Lincoln Journal Star

Posted on 8:44 AM by Unknown

Our feet are pretty amazing pieces of apparatus!

The 26 bones, 30 muscles, hundreds of tendons, ligaments and nerves are constantly working to soften the blow, keep us steady, absorb the shock and then propel us forward, at least 1,500 times a mile - and then we wonder why our feet hurt!

My goodness, why wouldn’t they hurt?

That is where proper shoe comes in. These 1,500 steps you take every mile, aren’t easy footfalls. There is 2.5-3 times your body weight coming down each step you take, so it falls on your shoes to bear the brunt of this repeated pounding, while comfortably taking care of your feet. Now, shoes can do all this IF you have the correct shoes. Correct meaning, correct shoes for your sport and for your feet. This is where we step in.

These shoes will take care of you, but only for so long. Shoes don’t last forever and the magic numbers are 300-400 miles. That’s the life expectancy of athletic shoes. After that, their job is done and you will notice it. Waiting longer than 300 miles is asking for injuries. You need to keep track of the miles or the time you have on your shoes and replace them when the miles or time is up.

The best way to ensure you’re on top of this is to keep a record of when you buy your shoes, such as a calendar or a training log. The proper shoes will help you attain the mileage you need and keep you injury free.

Here are some tips every athlete should know about shoes:

Purchasing your Shoes & Proper Shoe Fit

• Know what type of shoe is best for your foot.

• Buy shoes from a specialty running store to ensure proper shoe type and fit.

• Buy shoes that are appropriate for your foot type and training intensity, not for cosmetics or cost.

• Always get fitted for running shoes in the evening. Feet are larger at the end of the day. There should be half an inch between the longest toe and the end of the toe box.

• Wear athletic, moisture wicking socks when trying on shoes to ensure proper fit.

• Try on several pairs of shoes.

• Communicate with the salesperson.

• Take a test run in the shoes, at the store, before purchasing to confirm comfort and fit.

• If the shoes don’t feel good in the store, don’t buy them. Athletic shoes don’t need to be broken in to be comfortable.

Athletic Shoe Care

• Wear your shoes only for their sport. Wearing running or walking shoes for playing other sports can break down the motion control and cushioning of your shoes.

• Don’t kick off your shoes without untying then. This will destroy the heel counter.

• Don’t wash athletic shoes in the washing machine. This will deform their shape.

• Exposure to excessive heat will degrade the components of the shoe.

Purchasing the proper shoes, taking care of those shoes, and replacing them when they’re done will ensure you some happy, healthy feet and a happy, healthy body!

Athletic Shoe Replacement

• Excessively worn athletic shoes may lead to injury. Researchers note a significant correlation between infrequent change of running shoes and injuries.

• Replace shoes every 300 -400 miles or 4 -6 months if you wear your shoes everyday. Keep track of your weekly athletic activity and note when you purchase shoes.

• Insoles should be replaced after a month’s wear.

• Outsoles are made of durable compounds and are a poor indicator of remaining shoe life. In most cases the midsoles will wear out long before the outsole, especially for heavier athletes.

• Midsole materials last 300-400 miles, depending on the intensity of the training. Midsole wear is usually subtle, aches and pains are usually the indicator.

• Athletic shoes may lose 30% to 50% of their shock absorption after about 250 miles of use. Even after sitting on a shelf, their shock absorbing capabilities are significantly reduced after 1-2 years.

adidas Develops Energy Boost Running Shoe with BASF's Infinergy E-TPU Foam - Azom.com

Posted on 10:14 PM by Unknown

The world is on the move. To keep physically fit, more and more people jog for miles, across fields and along roadways. You can go running just about anywhere. All you need is comfortable apparel and a pair of running shoes.

Using BASF’s new foam Infinergy, adidas has now developed the Energy Boost, a thoroughly new running shoe with unique spring and cushioning properties.

The global sports equipment industry is profiting from an increased enthusiasm for running: Worldwide, runners spend an estimated €15 billion on their equipment. Customers place top priority on good footwear. Even people who only go jogging occasionally now look for lightweight soles that provide optimal shock absorption and enhanced running comfort.

Today’s sports shoes are genuine high-tech products compared to previous versions: The many different materials used to manufacture the shoes make them lightweight and stable. These materials enable the shoes to be tailored precisely to suite the style of running, the customer’s expectations and the various running disciplines. All this can be confirmed with a look around the development laboratories of sports shoe manufacturers: Test subjects run over sensitive pressure measuring plates which analyze and evaluate every step. High-speed cameras film the movement patterns and the heel-to-toe motion of the feet in the tiniest detail. All this information goes into the subsequent shoe design, which enables athletes to achieve new personal bests – and also offers recreational runners optimal running conditions.

Manufacturers are permanently on the lookout for cutting edge technologies and innovative materials. adidas is also constantly further developing its running shoes. The company, headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany, has been supported by BASF materials experts for more than 20 years. Using BASF’s new foam Infinergy™, adidas has now developed the Energy Boost, a thoroughly new running shoe with unique spring and cushioning properties. Its outstanding feature is the midsole, the central element of every running shoe. It is made from a new particle foam which absorbs the shock impact on the foot during jogging, while simultaneously cushioning the foot. The high rebound effect of the material provides the runner with an energy return not offered by any other running shoe.

Infinergy is made of expanded thermoplastic polyurethane, in short E-TPU. “E-TPU is manufactured by foaming the starting material, TPU granules,” explains Dr. Uwe Keppeler, material and process developer at BASF. “After pretreatment with pressure and heat, the individual granules measuring up to five millimeters each are blown up like popcorn.” In the process, its volume increases tenfold to produce oval foam beads with tiny, closed gas bubbles inside. “These sealed air cells make the lightweight foam beads very elastic and provide the desired rebound effect. The individual beads can be imagined as being like tiny footballs: The more air they contain, the better they bounce and rebound back,” says BASF research scientist Dr. Frank Prissok.

2,500 foam beads in one shoe

For every midsole, adidas needs about 2,500 of these small beads. To convert them into the desired form, they are treated with hot steam, a process in which the outmost layer of the beads melts slightly, causing them to bond into a stable shape. The internal air cell structure remains unaffected by this process.

A midsole made from Infinergy can be compressed to an extreme degree: by about half of its volume at a pressure of two bar. This property is particularly effective in absorbing the shock impact on the foot. As soon as the compressive impulse subsides, the foam returns to its original shape at lightning speed. The sole therefore absorbs the runner’s energy, but then returns a large amount to the runner. This rebound elasticity of the individual Infinergy beads literally transforms the running shoes into energy stores: “When the foot is pushed off the ground, the force expended is largely returned to the athlete. This results in completely new and improved running behavior. Many runners have told us that the shoe feels like it is almost alive,” explains Gerd Manz, Senior Innovation Director Global Brands at adidas. Another advantage of BASF’s specialty foam: It’s not only lightweight, but it also remains elastic over a wide temperature range. The particles make sure that the Energy Boost shoe also retains its positive properties at minus 20 degrees Celsius. “The running characteristics are therefore the same at frosty temperatures as at summerlike 30 degrees Celsius,” says Manz.

Material for unpuncturable tires

Very lightweight and elastic – these special properties make Infinergy a material with a wide range of applications. Some of these are currently in the trial phase (see info box on the last page). Others may still be a long way off, but are certainly feasible: in the future, BASF’s foam could, for example, make the “flat-less” bicycle tire that many cyclists are dreaming of become a reality. Infinergy is also potentially suitable as flooring for running tracks. For the automotive industry manufacturers, who are always searching for lightweight and robust materials, BASF’s specialty foam could also open up completely new opportunities.

“Combining irreconcilable properties”

Interview with Gerd Manz, Senior Innovation Director Global Brands at adidas

What benefits does Infinergy provide in the new running shoe?

The new material from BASF now allows us to combine properties such as softness and highly reactive resilience – two characteristics previously thought irreconcilable. The Energy Boost’s midsole offers a completely new running experience.

How did adidas test the new material?

Among other things, we simulated the heel strike to measure the energy return of the material. We found that BASF’s specialty plastic returns the energy much better than all previous materials. We also analyzed the temperature stability in the climate chamber and found that the sole material offers three times greater temperature resistance compared to conventional foam.

What can you say in regard to the sole’s durability?

In the compression test, we compress the material 10,000 times to evaluate its resistance: Although the foam is softer than previous materials, the cell structure remains intact for much longer and the shoe retains its properties for hundreds of kilometers.

A bed for cows

Cows like soft surfaces – and the more often and longer the animals lie down, the better the milk. Ruminants should rest for at least 12 hours, since the blood supply to the udder is optimal during their resting period – which increases milk production. Cows are also picky creatures and won’t lie down on just any surface. Cows’ mattresses made of the innovative particle foam Infinergy are not only soft, but also extremely tough and remain elastic even after prolonged use. BASF’s new plastic combines both properties for the first time. The mats have already passed the loading test performed by the German Agricultural Society (DLG) in which they were loaded 100,000 times with a weight of one metric ton. Practical tests are now underway in a trial cowshed of the DLG.

Buffer zone in the children’s jungle

Crossing rivers on wobbling stones, balancing over suspended bridges and traversing ravines. Children with rheumatic diseases can once again experience spectacular adventure sports in less hazardous terrain: at the Movement Park of the Rheumatism Clinic for Children in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, opened in the fall of 2012 in cooperation with the Munich company Innovationsmanufaktur. Here, the young patients can again have fun with sports and movement. Studies have shown that rheumatism and sport are not mutually exclusive – on the contrary, targeted training can promote the physical fitness. Particularly important, however, is that the children’s joints should not be overstrained. This is why a well cushioned floor and soft elements play a major role. BASF’s novel material Infinergy provides optimal properties for the “jungle zone” of the Movement Park. With its good rebound characteristics, the floor can soften falls very effectively. The material is also very weather resistant and tough – making it ideal for outdoor applications.

Jack Knox: Still time to get sand in your shoes - Victoria Times Colonist

Posted on 4:58 PM by Unknown

It rained this week. Not a lot, but after the driest summer since Prohibition it felt like a deluge. Six Victorians, gaping open-mouthed at the sky in confusion, drowned.

Take it as distant thunder, a warning of what lies ahead: short days, long pants, longer faces. The back-to-school ads read like obituaries for our Huck Finn freedom.

The question now is whether you took advantage of the glorious summer that God gave us or — blasphemy! — frittered it away at work. Here’s a checklist:

• Did you get sand in your shoes?

• Are you still using last year’s sunblock?

• Did you have to refill the barbecue tank?

• Is your fishing tackle rusty, your sleeping bag musty?

• Did you throw an outdoor party? Are you too embarrassed to give the bottle-drive kids all your empties at once?

• Did you take vacation?

That last one is interesting, as surveys show Canadians often don’t take the holidays to which they are entitled — and relative to the rest of the developed world, we’re not entitled to that many.

When the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Economic Policy and Research compared the minimum number of holidays required by law in 21 wealthy countries, Canada ranked third from the bottom. With a combined total of 19 vacation days and statutory holidays, we trail only Japan and the U.S., according to a survey released this summer.

By contrast, all European Union countries demand at least four weeks paid vacation alone. Austria and Portugal have a minimum of 35 paid vacation days and stats. Spain and Germany have 34. (Getting out-vacationed by the hard-working Germans is like losing a hot dog eating contest to a supermodel.)

And get this: Five of the countries in the survey even make employers pay vacationing workers a small premium to offset holiday-related expenses. (The sound you hear is the exploding heads of Canadian employers, not to mention the self-employed and unemployed.)

A separate study by Mercer Consulting placed Canada dead last in the number of minimum paid days off, saying that in practice U.S. companies typically offer at least 25 stat and vacation days.

Of course, the minimum legal requirement doesn’t reflect the number of days actually taken. According to Expedia.ca’s online 2013 “vacation deprivation” survey, Canadians get an average of 17 vacation days annually — half as many as most Europeans enjoy. Expedia ranks us near the bottom of the list in a “vacation-deprived” group that includes the U.S., Mexico, Singapore and South Korea.

What’s more, 27 per cent of Canadians don’t take all the holidays they earn, largely because they are too busy at work or there aren’t enough staff to cover their jobs. Just over half of the British Columbians surveyed have cancelled vacations because, gosh, they couldn’t possibly leave work without the whole company collapsing like the Maple Leafs in the playoffs.

Even when we play, we work: Six in 10 Canadians check office voice mail or email at least sporadically while away. Just have to scratch that itch.

Which brings us to the appropriately named Labour Day, when you are supposed to swap your swim trunks for corporate climbing gear (suit, tie, underwear) and go back to the grind. Everybody out of the pool and into a funk.

The question, whether you have a job to return to or not, whether you took an actual vacation or not, is how you spent a summer so glorious it belonged in a beer commercial. Did you carouse, neglect the yard, call in “sick” from the beach, outsleep the dog, lose your sunglasses to an outhouse, and jump into the lake with all your clothes on (and your phone in your pocket) — or did you squander summer instead?

It’s not too late. Draw up a bucket list of what you want to achieve (or, better yet, not achieve) before the season dies. Get outside, as far from the pavement as you can. Wear short pants. Or no pants (but don’t forget sunscreen). Sleep under the stars, or at least the moderately well-known.

This summer has been a gift. Open it.
