Schapiro: The state of the gubernatorial race - Richmond Times Dispatch

Posted on 9:43 PM by Unknown

It seems difficult to believe, but the candidates for governor actually talk about issues other than each other.

Sometimes their positions are counterintuitive: Republican Ken Cuccinelli questions the spiraling cost to taxpayers of the GOP-written no-parole law. Sometimes they’re conventional: Democrat Terry McAuliffe proposes junking standardized exams for public school kids because their instructors, whose union endorsed him, teach to the test.

At the beginning of the end of the Virginia campaign — the Labor Day pivot to Election Day — little of this seeps through the fog of attacks and counterattacks pegged to the nominees’ polling-confirmed flaws and the mistrust of politics fed by the scandal that is destroying the governor McAuliffe or Cuccinelli will succeed.

The state of the race is grim and promises to become more so because of factors Cuccinelli and McAuliffe choose not to control — or can’t:

• Giftgate has rendered Bob McDonnell useless to Republicans. He could become a pair of cement shoes.

Ordinarily, a popular incumbent is a potent salesman for his party’s candidates, generating good will and a surfeit of contributions. McDonnell is someone from whom Republicans run. And a Cuccinelli commercial runs over him, crediting Cuccinelli, as attorney general, with launching a conflict-of-interest investigation of McDonnell.

Expect more of that if McDonnell is indicted by a federal grand jury on public-corruption charges.

Cuccinelli will have no choice but to depict McDonnell as a pariah. There are two reasons for this: An indictment magnifies Cuccinelli’s own ethics mess, the shorthand of which is Star Scientific and Consol Energy. Also, the prospect of McDonnell frog-marched into the U.S. courthouse would depress Republican turnout and trigger a throw-the-bums-out reflex among Democrats and independents.

And a tarnished McAuliffe would be the beneficiary.

To fellow Democrats, he is viewed as ethically challenged, given his roles in many of the Clinton controversies and those in which he has star billing. This includes his electric car company, now under federal investigation for possibly abusing a visa-for-jobs program to bag Chinese investors.

• Republicans, badly divided before their statewide ticket was completed in May, are now nearly at war with themselves.

The Cuccinelli switcheroo — the shift from a primary to a convention that doomed Bill Bolling — rubbed raw nerves that were further frayed by McDonnell’s two promise-breaking initiatives: new road taxes and an expected expansion of Medicaid to comply with Obamacare. Neither would have been implemented without solid support by Democrats to make up for Republican rebels.

The struggle among Republicans is again flaring publicly.

In June and August, tea partyers jammed meetings of the legislative panel that will oversee Medicaid expansion. Last week, state Republican Chairman Pat Mullins and Susan Stimpson, defeated for the GOP lieutenant governor’s nomination, curtly dueled over Medicaid via mass-circulation email. Mullins said bigger, costlier Medicaid is not a done deal. Stimpson suggested it is.

This can only discourage Republicans, give them an excuse not to vote. Usually it is Republicans who benefit from low-turnout elections. Who could imagine the key to McAuliffe’s much-discussed get-out-the-vote program would be the Republicans who stay home Nov. 5?

• Cuccinelli is losing the money race — badly.

Fundraising is a referendum on candidates. With McAuliffe way ahead in cash, even more could flow his way because donors gravitate to perceived winners. McAuliffe has raised more than $12.6 million; Cuccinelli, nearly $8.9 million. McAuliffe has on hand $6 million; Cuccinelli, $2.6 million.

The only other campaign for governor this year is in New Jersey. Because it’s not much of one — Republican Chris Christie, a White House prospect in 2016, is heavily favored for a second term — more national money in Virginia is likely.

Independent single-interest groups are just beginning to meddle in the Cuccinelli-McAuliffe contest. For them, the Virginia election is a chance to exact a chit from the victor and to fine-tune themes and technology for congressional and presidential elections.

• Geopolitics are skewed by issues and personalities, possibly exaggerating McAuliffe’s advantages and diminishing Cuccinelli’s.

Northern Virginia is heavily Democratic. Because it is next door to Washington, national and local politics are one and the same. McAuliffe is relying on this to boost turnout, especially in the outer suburbs of Loudoun and Prince William counties.

It may not be hard because it’s easy for Democrats to vote against Cuccinelli. Cuccinelli, by his own hand and the national media, has been reduced to caricature: a no-no-a-thousand-times-no tea partyer whose policies toward women seem misogynistic; toward immigrants, nativistic.

Cuccinelli must be competitive in the urban crescent. He has to win going away in the countryside, a Republican bulwark.

That’s a challenge in Southwest Virginia. Republicans say Cuccinelli is losing friends fast in the region because of a controversy associated with his day job as attorney general.

A federal judge expressed outrage that a lawyer in the attorney general’s office advised two large energy companies in a fight with landowners over natural gas royalties. The state’s inspector general was sufficiently alarmed, too. He’s now investigating Cuccinelli’s office.

It’s bad enough, locals say, that Cuccinelli is seen as siding with corporate big boys. Worse is his perceived conflict of interest, having taken more than $110,000 in contributions from one of the firms, Consol Energy.

And we still have 65 days to go.

Hundreds lace up their shoes for the 31st annual Buckshot Run - WEAU

Posted on 7:28 PM by Unknown

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Hundreds laced up their running shoes today to celebrate the buckshot run's 31st birthday.

Individuals, families and even groups of co-workers got together to raise money for the Indianhead Special Olympics.

Today was the perfect day for Nicole Budik to take out her running shoes.

“I was very active before I had him (her infant son), I did a triathlon then. After I had him and working full time, it kind of took a while to get back into the swing of things,” said Budik.

Budik ran in the fundraiser with her 16 months old son for the first time. She conquered two miles along with nearly 500 other Mayo Clinic Health System employees, who trained for nine weeks to do the buckshot.

“We really have become a family event and a labor day tradition,” said Karen Kraus, with the Indianhead Special Olympics.

But as some ran for the first time, Don Betthauser hit his 30th year-mark of participating in the event.

“As long as they keep having it I'm going to keep trying to do it,” said Betthauser.

Now Betthauser says it’s a family tradition. All his friends and family alone generated more than 1000-dollars participating last year.

“Participation now is very much higher than it used to be in the past. It’s a good things, it just generates extra dollars for Special Olympics.

“The money that we get locally stays here and it helps our athletes compete it sports all year long,” said Kraus.

“We always raise money for everything, if we go to a game,” said Charley Gainey athlete with the Special Olympics.

Gainey is a tri-athlete and captain of his high school team. He says sports is his passion.

Special Olympics athletes say because of the fundraiser like this one their dream of competing is sports can come true.

“It's not about winning or losing, just have fun and have a great time like we're doing right now,” added Gainey.

Event organizers say around 17-hundred people took part in the race.

And they surpassed last year's fundraising of 56-thousand dollars, reaching just over 60-grand.

Queen of Instagram - The Star Online

Posted on 5:55 PM by Unknown

What every girl wants: ‘You want to be loved by your loved ones, you want to have nice things.’ And become famous on social media.

SINGAPOREAN socialite Jamie Chua, 39, leads a picture-perfect life, showcased on her Instagram fashion blog daily with photographs of herself in different designer outfits, taken by her two maids.

She has close to 89,000 followers on the year-old social media account, making her one of the top Instagram fashionistas in Singapore.

She not only posts photographs of her outfits, she also shares pictures of her shopping buys and her extensive designer handbag and shoe collections.

One picture shows her cleaning her bag closet with the caption: “There are some things that cannot be left to the help.”

Fan comments range from thumbs-ups for the day’s outfit and handbag, to excited reports of sightings of Chua as if she is a celebrity. At least two separate fan clubs have been set up on Instagram to repost her pictures: jamiechuafcsg and jamiechuafansclub at instagram.com.

“It’s great. I get to share my fashion sense,” the mother of two teenagers says at her bungalow in Merryn Road, Singapore, perfectly attired in the last of three outfits chosen for this three-hour-long interview – a white Givenchy top, a trailing black skirt by Balmain and, of course, her signature Christian Louboutin heels that are at least 10cm high.

Though she greeted this reporter and photographer in a loose sailor top, shorts and fuzzy pink slippers, she insisted on changing into more formal clothes to show us around the “2.5-storey” house she has occupied since 2008 with her children and parents, who are in their 60s.

The house comes with an L-shaped swimming pool, a wine cellar with prestige labels such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild and a walk-in wardrobe that is almost as big as the attached master bedroom.

She has spent most of her life under the spotlight. The oldest child and only girl of three born to a travel agent and a housewife, she started modelling at age 15 while studying at CHIJ Toa Payoh. Advertising campaigns for fast-food chain KFC and electronics giant Sony paid for her first designer piece – a S$2,000 (about RM5,000 at today’s rates) Chanel bag that, to her rue, she ruined by spilling ice kacang on it.

At age 20, after three years as an air stewardess with Singapore Airlines, she married Indonesian tycoon Nurdian Cuaca, about nine years her senior. They have two children, son Cleveland, now 19 and studying in Australia, and daughter Calista, now 14 and studying here.

The couple filed for divorce in 2010, making headlines as Chua had sought S$450,000 (RM1.2mil) in monthly maintenance, based on the standard of living she had enjoyed. The suit was resolved confidentially in November 2011. Earlier that year, she had closed the two Manolo Blahnik outlets that she ran at Hilton Hotel and Marina Bay Sands.

Only a handful of shoes from that label are in her wardrobe. She now prefers the crystal-encrusted range from Charlotte Olympia (cat-themed “kitty flats” that cost S$900 or RM2,334) or Christian Louboutin’s eye-popping red sole shoes that cost at least S$1,000 (RM2,593).

Chua, formerly Jamie Cuaca, made headlines this year when she asked for S$450,000 monthly alimony from her former husband of 15 years, an Indonesian tycoon - and she showed shopping receipts to prove why.

Part of Chua's multi-million-dollar fashion fantasy.

Her closets are a multi-million-dollar fashion fantasy, with about 200 Hermes Birkin and Kelly bags arranged in glass cases according to design, ostrich leather separated from crocodile. She declines to reveal their cost but says that a favourite bubblegum pink one bought from a reseller in London was so pricey that the retailer hand-delivered it here. She says: “I certainly paid a lot more for it than he did.”

Retail prices for a Birkin bag in a non-exotic skin begin at around S$12,000 (RM31,123).

In velvet-cushioned drawers and cases nearby are even more glittering accessories, including bracelets from Chrome Hearts and Cartier and hair clips from Alexandre de Paris.

Clothes are grouped by style – one closet for furs, usually worn on overseas holidays, especially when visiting her son in Melbourne; another for full-length evening gowns and still more for cocktail dresses, day dresses, jeans and Ts. As she responds to requests for description, labels such as Fendi, Alexander McQueen and Oscar de la Renta trip off her tongue.

The Instagram fashion diary began as a way to stay in touch with her children online but now helps her keep track of what she has, she says. “Some pieces I might keep for a lifetime. It’s important to keep track of how we mix and match, we don’t want to be caught wearing the exact same thing twice.”

She changes twice during the interview, also wearing a grey print Mary Katrantzou and a Balmain skirt and Roland Mouret top. Asked how much the outfits cost, she winces. “Won’t it be a bit crass?” she says, sliding on a diamond-studded, one-of-a-kind Tourbillon watch from Richard Mille, which retails in the range of S$800,000 (RM2mil).

She knows exactly how she wants to be showcased.

When the photographer tries to take candid shots, she pauses mid-conversation to flash a practised smile. Later, she directs one of her two maids to take pictures at the same angle and the shots appear on Instagram within hours. Her helpers take all her photos for Instagram, often re-shooting several times until their employer’s exacting standards are met. Friends help her document outfits on overseas trips.

A hairstylist and make-up artist have been kept on standby for the day, though she usually does her own, taking up to 90 minutes before she is satisfied.

After showing off the ripening custard apples in her new kitchen garden, she returns to the air- conditioned house and calls out: “Powder puff!” to repair the slight damage caused by sweating in the sun.

Miki Gao, 23, of the Kim Robinson salon does her hair. Her make-up artist of 20 years, Cecilia Chng of Vive Salon, who declines to give her age, touches up her lips.

Chua ignores the brightly lit mirror at her dressing table in favour of taking a smartphone picture of herself to study the result.

The walls of her bedroom and reception area are decorated with blown-up pictures taken at magazine shoots for society and fashion magazines. They complement the bling and brands of her home decor – Hermes cushions and crockery, Swarovski crystal-studded chandeliers adorn the living area, done in dramatic black and white.

She is at home in the limelight. “Even as a child, I’ve seen lots of pictures of me,” she says.

“I would use my mum’s make-up, she bought me high-heel shoes. I would design my own clothes. I would take a flower, hold it and say, ‘Take a picture of me’.”

She declines to talk about the recent past or her current boyfriend, who appears often in her Instagram profile. She does say that the past two years have been healing, especially with her parents around to help.

She is limiting herself to three balls a year and shopping online or at Singapore fashion events rather than jet-setting to Paris’ annual Fashion Week, as she used to, where influential designers trot out their latest creations and VVIP customers watch from the front row.

She likes to spend time working in her garden and having brunches and tea sessions with family and friends at home. “I love to eat, I can eat five times a day,” she says, pressing home-made bee hoon and fried chicken on her guests and explaining how she used to cook every night until her maids graduated from cooking classes at Tanglin Community Club a few months ago.

She tops up tea cups and takes a thick slice of pound cake from the array of pastries carefully arranged on a three-tier cake tray.

She keeps in shape at home with yoga and thrice- weekly swimming sessions. Daily face masks and Sunday spa sessions are part of the regime, as are at-home manicure and pedicure sessions, often with her daughter and son, when he visits.

Her fame rubs off on them too, especially when a photoshoot she did with Calista for Chinese fashion and lifestyle magazine Icon became the top-read story on news site AsiaOne.com this month, but she hopes the exposure will not turn their heads. “I hope they realise they have a pretty blessed life,” she says.

She shrugs off detractors who might think her Instagram image is all there is to her.

“The people who matter to me know who I am and what I’m about. What I show on Instagram is just a small part of me.

“Contrary to what people see of me, I’m actually simple at heart,” she adds.

“I only want what every girl wants in life. You want to be loved by your loved ones, you want to have nice things.” – The Straits Times, Singapore/Asia News Network

Jenkins fills suspended Arizona star's running shoes in win - GoAZcats.com (subscription)

Posted on 5:14 PM by Unknown

August 31, 2013

GOAZCATS.com Senior Editor

The only drama on a rainy Friday night at Arizona[1] 's season opener occurred two hours prior to kickoff. An explosive third quarter from the defense took care of the game itself.

With star running back Ka'Deem Carey[2] suspended, his replacement filled in admirably and three second-half interceptions from the defense powered the Wildcats to a 35-0 win over Northern Arizona in front of 53,793 fans at Arizona Stadium.

Daniel Jenkins[3] , a fifth-year senior who nearly transferred to Washington State[4] in the offseason, earned the start and finished with 139 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. He also led the team with three catches for 13 yards - including an 11-yard score on the game's opening drive.

As a team, Arizona (1-0) collected 306 of its 393 yards on the ground.

"The holes just opened up like the Red Sea and I just took it," said Jenkins, who topped 100 rushing yards for the first time in his career.

Jenkins' previous career high was 78 yards against Arizona State[5] last November.

Carey, who led the nation with 1,929 rushing yards and a school-record 23 rushing touchdowns last season, went through a troubling offseason that included a domestic violence incident in December - charges were dropped in June - as well as a verbal altercation with campus police and event staff during a Wildcats basketball game the following month.

UA head coach Rich Rodriguez[6] left open the possibility of punishing the junior leading up to the game, but there was no formal announcement. The decision was made ahead of time and kept in-house, Rodriguez said.

"We have team policies and team rules," Rodriguez said of Carey's suspension. "One of the ways to make it most effective is to have playing time taken away. And I'm sure Ka'Deem was hurt because he's a great competitor.

"He took it like he's supposed to take it. He's known for awhile, as have I."

Rodriguez added: "I want to make it clear: Since spring, since the semester has been over, he has done everything we've asked. Everything."

Carey is expected to make his season debut next Saturday at UNLV[7] .

Before the news of Carey broke, the big story was supposed to be who Rodriguez would start at quarterback after a three-man depth chart at the position did not list one.

In just his second career start, and first since last November, quarterback B.J. Denker[8] completed 9 of 13 passes for just 87 yards and a touchdown. The senior also ran as many times for 71 yards - including a 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Even without the workhorse Carey, the combination of Denker and Jenkins ran the ball six consecutive times to open the game. Denker's first pass was a 31-yard completion to Garic Wharton[9] that got UA in the red zone, setting up a wide-open, 11-yard touchdown pass to Jenkins two plays later for the early 7-0 lead.

But after gaining 75 yards in the 10-play drive, Arizona's next three possessions - two punts and a turnover on downs - amounted to just 80 combined yards over 16 plays.

Rodriguez said that while Denker was "solid," there was a lack of "explosive plays" in the passing game and sub-par execution on third downs. UA was just 4 for 10 in such situations.

"Obviously, the stats weren't off the charts, but we got the win and I'm happy about that," said Denker, who was not formally told he would get the nod.

"I ran out there on the field and (the coaches) didn't stop me, so I assumed I was the starter."

Following an NAU punt, however, Jenkins busted loose for a 91-yard scoring dash to run the score to 14-0 with 5:32 left in the half. It was the third-longest run in school history, behind only a 96-yarder by Trung Canidate and 94-yarder by Nic Grigsby.

Unlike Carey's big runs that seemed to fall short of the exclamation-point finish, Jenkins said there was "not a chance" he would be caught.

The UA defense, which limited NAU (0-1) to just 127 yards in the opening half, opened the third quarter with a defensive touchdown in the first 13 seconds to provide a momentum boost coming out of the locker room.

With an assist from true freshman Scooby Wright[10] 's pressure and deflection, safety Tra'Mayne Bondurant[11] swooped in for an easy 23-yard interception return on NAU quarterback Kyren Poe[12] 's pass to run the lead to 21.

"When you score a touchdown on defense, it always feels good," Bondurant said. "I got the interception just off playing hard, so that's always good."

Poe opened the game with 10 consecutive completions and was 11 for 12 prior to the pick-six. He finished the game 21 for 36 for 176 yards and three interceptions - all in the third quarter.

Wright, who started his first collegiate game at linebacker, finished with six tackles - one for a loss - and was a wrap-up away from a safety in a stellar debut.

"We gave [Wright] crap about that (missed safety)," said senior linebacker Jake Fischer[13] , who tied Bondurant with a game-high seven tackles.

He wasn't the only first-year player on defense to impress. Leading 28-0 after Denker pinballed his way for a rushing score, the Wildcats picked off Poe again as Devin Holiday[14] stepped in for his first career interception with 8:07 left in the third.

"I'm sure they were excited that we got a win and they got a chance to get their first action as a Division I football player," Rodriguez said of the freshmen.

Before the quarter was done, Bondurant added his second interception with 10 seconds left.

Against the run, Arizona limited NAU standout Zach Bauman[15] to 71 yards on 21 carries.

All that was left to watch in the final 15 minutes was whether the Wildcats could preserve the shutout.

Rodriguez pulled his starters late in the fourth, inserting redshirt freshman Javelle Allen[16] in place of Denker. More of a runner than a passer, Allen read the defense and capped the scoring with a 61-yard touchdown run with 4:40 remaining.

Denker said afterward that a win did not cement his status as the starter.

"My job isn't safe because I got this win," Denker said. "I'm going to have to work hard every week. We're going to watch the film and see some of the mistakes that I made.

"But I can't be relaxed because I won my first start - and I'm not going to be. I didn't do all of the things right that I wanted to do."

Notes

The Arizona Stadium pressbox was renamed after longtime sports information director Tom Duddleston, who retired earlier in the year. ? Meanwhile, the TV broadcast booth was named after Dave Sitton, the longtime voice of Arizona football and basketball who died on Aug. 12. He was 58. ? Both teams wore special decals on the helmets, honoring the 19 firefighters who lost their lives in the Yarnell Hill fire in June. ? Freshman defensive lineman Luca Bruno[17] , who was expected to contribute in a reserve role, had a "clearinghouse issue" that prevented him from being available, Rodriguez said. The team also continues to wait on a ruling regarding Davonte Neal[18] .

Notebook: New faces step up - Gatorsports.com

Posted on 5:10 PM by Unknown

Count Florida senior defensive lineman Dominique Easley as someone not surprised how well true freshman cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III played in Saturday's season-opener against Toledo

“We knew Hargreaves was going to step up since camp,” Easley said. “All these guys knew what the deal was. We all want to get to one place and they understand that. That's the one thing about these young guys.”

Hargreaves was one of several young players to step up during UF's 24-6 win over the Rockets at The Swamp. With starting cornerback Loucheiz Purifoy suspended due to disciplinary reasons, Hargreaves made the most of his opportunity. The five-star recruit and Tampa native came up with a momentum-changing interception in the second half.

With Florida up 17-6, Hargreaves made a nice break on a crossing route thrown by Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens and returned the pick 15 yards to the Toledo 23-yard line. The interception set up Florida's final score of the game, a 4-yard TD pass from quarterback Jeff Driskel to fullback Gideon Ajagbe.

Florida coach Will Muschamp said there were “no conversations” about whether Hargreaves should take the field as a true freshman. The coach said he contemplated starting Hargreaves at nickelback before a shoulder injury sidelined him for some practices late in camp. Sophomore Brian Poole started at nickelback instead, but by the second half, Hargreaves was playing the majority of the snaps.

“He practices really well,” Muschamp said. “I look at the guys who go compete and practice everyday … he's very cerebral, very smart. The game comes very easy, very well to him and he works hard at it.”

Hargreaves wasn't the only true freshman to step up on Saturday. Freshman receiver Ahmad Fulwood made his first career catch, a 5-yard gain that resulted in a first down. Late in the game, Florida freshman running back Kelvin Taylor (the son of former Gator running back Fred Taylor) had five carries for 43 yards, including a 27-yard run on his second career carry. On defense, true freshman safety Keanu Neal had two tackles.

Injury update

Florida made it out of its season opener relatively injury free. Starting left tackle D.J. Humphries sat out the fourth quarter with a sprained MCL, but Muschamp said he should be OK in time for next week's showdown at rival Miami.

Hardin makes debut

It was an up-and-down debut for Florida kicker Austin Hardin. The redshirt freshman, replacing departed All-SEC kicker Caleb Sturgis, made 1 of 2 field goals and all three extra point attempts.

Hardin split the uprights on a 24-yard attempt on his first career attempt, giving the Gators a 10-0 lead. But in the fourth quarter, Hardin hooked a 39-yard attempt wide left.

“I lined up and pulled it a little bit left, picked my head up a little bit early, barely missed it outside the left post,” Hardin said. “You're gonna have misses and the biggest thing is how you respond.”

Rhett fires up crowd

Former Gator running back Errict Rhett revived the “Mr. Two Bits” tradition, leading the Florida cheer made famous by George Edmondson before the start of the game.

A different celebrity guest will lead the cheer before each UF home game. Edmondson retired in 2008, and Muschamp wanted to revive the tradition.

“It was a great honor to fill the shoes of a guy that kept us hyped for so many Florida games,” Rhett said. “I don't know if I did a good enough job, but I tried to be as enthusiastic as I could.”

Rhett starred with the Gators from 1990-93 before going to play seven seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. He now lives near his native Fort Lauderdale, where he runs his charitable foundation and is involved with a construction company that builds affordable housing.

Rhett said he's a big fan of the direction that the program is going under Muschamp.

“He's enthusiastic, probably as enthusiastic as the players and more enthusiastic than any of the other coaches in the SEC,” Rhett said.

Asked about the performance of Florida junior running back Mack Brown, Rhett smiled and responded: “He wears a great number.” Like Brown, Rhett wore No. 33 during his UF career.

Empty seats

For the third straight season, Florida failed to sell out its home opener. The announced attendance was 83,604, with close to 6,400 tickets unsold for the 12:21 p.m. kickoff in late August. The temperature at kickoff was 87 degrees with 68 percent humidity.

After the game, Florida junior linebacker Ronald Powell was asked how he felt seeing empty seats in the stands coming off an 11-win season.

“It's our job to fill them up,” Powell said. “The people that were here today were great Gator fans and the people who weren't fortunate enough to be able to come … it's up to us. If we keep playing well, those seats will be filled.”

Showers impressive

Valdez Showers showed why he was moved from the defensive to offensive side of the ball in camp. The defensive back turned running back finished with 31 rushing yards and 23 yards receiving, including a 29-yard on a sweep play.

“He's different than what we have,” Muschamp said. “He's a top end speed guy. ... We felt like he was a guy that could be special with the ball in his hands.”

Etc:

Florida won its 24th straight opener, the second-longest streak of season-opening wins in the nation behind Nebraska (27 straight entering Saturday night). … Florida improved to 13-0 under Muschamp when rushing for more than 150 yards. … Florida scored a TD on its opening drive of the season for the first time since 2009 against Charleston Southern. The 11-play drive featured eight runs and three passes and was capped by a one-yard TD run from Brown. Florida scored just one first-quarter TD in its last six games of the 2012 season. … Easley said he didn't know before the game that ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit picked Toledo to upset the Gators. “I don't listen to him,” Easley said. “He probably never played football.” When told he played quarterback at Ohio State, Easley said. “He did? I didn't know.”

Lubbock residents react to Miley's VMA antics - LubbockOnline.com

Some people hated it. Some people loved it. Some people claimed they didn’t care one way or the other, but all week Lubbock residents have been talking about Miley Cyrus and her risque dance moves at the MTV Video Music Awards Aug. 25.

“My kids, we were all, everybody was pretty much disgusted,” said Debbie Dickey-Pate, mother of three and employee at Wentz Orthodontics.

Although Cyrus has been the subject of ample criticism in Lubbock this week, one local public relations expert says Cyrus’ actions provided a sizable boost to her career -- and none of it was by accident.

“The thing that struck me about that entire affair was just how strategic and calculated the entire thing was,” said Glenn Cummins, an associate professor in the College of Media and Communications at Texas Tech. “I recall leading up to the VMAs she was tweeting some photos ... It was clearly done very intentionally.”

Cyrus tweeted several photos during the week before the VMAs, most of which featured the young singer in provocative clothing. Many of the tweets promoted her new album “Bangerz,” set to release in October.

Lubbock’s response to Cyrus’ actions has been overwhelmingly negative, but most people — especially the teens who grew up knowing Cyrus as the wholesome Disney star Hannah Montana — remain divided on where to place the blame.

Some seniors at Lubbock High School shared their thoughts with the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal this week.

“Those child stars, especially Miley Cyrus, I feel like you have to put the fault on the media,” said Katrina Bueno, a Lubbock High student. “You can’t really put the fault on them, much of it. They are the ones doing the actions, but I feel like, maybe consciously or unconsciously, they’re going against what everybody has thought of them and what previously they’ve stood for.”

Brandon Thomas agreed with Bueno.

“I think that we do see the trend of child stars progressing into the model of bad person after they were good,” he said. “This is her way of, I guess, getting free.”

Some students said they were less concerned about Cyrus’ actions and media coverage than they were about the reactions she has received in the public.

“I believe it is society in general,” said Dayton Dorman. “The fault lays on the celebrity, his or her agent, his or her family, the media, but most importantly on the audience ... People had the power to completely forget about talents such as Susan Boyle. They have the power to ignore such trashy displays as Cyrus’s. Therefore this is a much bigger problem than just the media, but rather of the views of society and the psychological need for attention whether good or bad.”

Regardless of how the public feels about Cyrus, her sudden reemergence into the spotlight has been undeniable.

"I hate to use the word brand," said Cummins, "but she stands to benefit from her brand awareness ... Regardless of your attitude, positive or negative, they're certainly aware."

In the wake of all Cyrus' media attention, Dickey-Pate and others remember the less controversial persona of Cyrus their children used to watch on the Disney Channel.

"She had a lot of little girls, really all those characters in those shows, I think a lot of those little girls idolize them," Dickey-Pate said. "Sometimes child stars, when they age and start doing these things, these girls are still following them."

"Amanda Bynes, Lindsey Lohan, all those kids ... I think the last thing I would want right now would be have my child be a child star," she added.

Two local high school students believe that Cyrus and her ilk turn to more provocative performances as they age to retain the fame they had as children.

"She was a star when she was Hannah Montana," said Alexander Morgan-Fleming. "Now she's Miley Cyrus, but no one's like, 'Did you see Miley Cyrus on TV?' This is her way of getting attention again and sort of being in the media spotlight."

Morgan-Fleming's classmate, Ja'lon Clark, agreed.

"Now they've got your attention, and you're still going to like it and listen to it, even if you're like, 'Oh, they're doing all this trashy stuff,'" said Clark.

Cummins, too, believes performers like Cyrus who act out for attention do so to feed the desire to feel famous.

"I think it really is a need," he said. "A sweet, innocent Disney teen, there's no longer a need for that market once they reach a certain age. They either need to reinvent themselves or disappear."

As Cyrus has departed from her original image, Cummins wonders what the effects of the star's new attitude will be on her past work and how Disney will fill that void.

"You don't see Hannah Montana reruns on TV," he said. "I think the kind of downside of this is it takes off that content that could have had a long shelf life."

The emergence of Miley Cyrus, the provocative performer, has effectively killed Hannah Montana, the children's icon. Disney will need a new star, but how will that star respond when her time in the spotl

"They have to come up with somebody else," Cummins noted. "Hannah Montana's grown up, so find somebody else to fill those shoes."

What ShoeDazzle taught us about subscription commerce - GigaOM

Posted on 12:42 PM by Unknown

ShoeDazzle may no longer be dazzling, but it’s delivering useful lessons in subscription commerce.

I still remember the thrill of receiving my first ShoeDazzle[1] delivery. The beautifully wrapped package, the perfect pair of shoes for me inside, the fun welcome letter, and the confidence I had that I could ship it back at no cost if I didn’t like it – all for $40! It seemed too good to be true, and perhaps it was.

Four years later, ShoeDazzle has been acquired[2] by its primary competitor, JustFab, after dropping to about a tenth of its $200 million valuation and failing to achieve profitability despite a valiant attempt by boomerang CEO Brian Lee to revive the business. It’s a sad outcome for a brand that once held so much promise — great products, cool business model, solid financial backing, celebrity appeal.

In trying to move past the disappointment, I’ve found some important lessons that apply to future subscription businesses, including the newly combined JustFab. Most of the lessons stem from how different the subscription commerce business model is from other kinds of retail, even e-commerce.

First, there’s the need for different metrics. The number of customer acquisitions is much less important than the quality of acquisitions. When Bill Strauss took the reins of ShoeDazzle, he deemed its 10 million members insufficient and set about trying to bring in millions more by jettisoning membership and opening the site to anyone. What he didn’t understand was that those initial existing members loved the brand — they were not only acting as brand ambassadors to spread awareness of the site, but were also likely to continue buying over time. Compared to cultivated members, customers are less loyal, more fickle, and harder to please.

Further, the typical retail metric of cost of customer acquisition is less relevant than customer lifetime value. It may cost more to acquire a quality customer, but she will produce a greater return with higher value/more frequent purchases, longer retention, and brand advocacy. A subscription business model requires a longer-term view on metrics.

The value proposition looks different with subscription commerce too. It’s not enough to have cool products — they should be exclusive whenever possible. That was part of ShoeDazzle’s initial appeal. Because its styles were designed specifically for the site, they generated so much demand. Exclusivity remains JustFab’s strongest path forward, and it can be leveraged even further through exclusive prices (special prices depending on membership level), exclusive access (new products available in advance), exclusive services (concierge services and enhanced customer style profiling), and exclusive experiences (interactions with celebrity designers, virtual fashion shows, etc.)

With a subscription, the customer value equation is no longer simply the product divided by the price. It involves status and benefits, which are more intangible but more valuable.

The ShoeDazzle story also teaches us that subscription commerce requires a different kind of brand and brand strategy. In order to capitalize on subscriber value, the best growth comes from expansion into new categories — that is, selling other products and services to the same people (vs. selling the same stuff to other people). A subscription brand, therefore, must be developed with elasticity. A name like ShoeDazzle is limiting, whereas JustFab is more flexible. Beyond the name, the brand personality, visual identity, and cultural associations should also allow for more stretch.

Also a brand position based on relevance makes more sense than one based on accessibility. Offering fewer products that are “just right” for customers and communicating messages that express brand identification increases customers’ feelings of brand affinity, whereas having a huge selection of more random products and a brand that is marketed as “something for everyone” dilutes perceptions of brand value. A subscription brand essence stems less from being a retailer and more from carefully curating the membership experience.

Ultimately, subscription commerce requires a different mindset. Subscription-based companies are building relationships, not selling products. Of course, those relationships must be monetized — it’s a business, not a charity. But the focus needs to be on engagement and shared value. Models to emulate include Lady Gaga’s Little Monsters and American Express, not ProFlowers and Woot.

I may no longer be a customer of ShoeDazzle, but from the company I’ve gotten some valuable insights into subscription businesses — that, and some great shoes.

Denise Lee Yohn has been inspiring and teaching companies how to operationalize their brands to grow their businesses for 25 years. World-class brands including Sony, Frito-Lay, Burger King, and Nautica have called on Denise, a brand-building expert, speaker, and writer. She is the author of What Great Brands Do: The Seven Brand-Building Principles that Separate the Best from the Rest (Jossey-Bass, January, 2014.) 50 funniest jokes of all time - Easier (press release)

Posted on 10:55 AM by Unknown
Laughter

A one-liner about a Dutch girl with inflatable shoes has been hailed as the funniest joke ever, as researchers compiled 180 popular jokes from the worldwide web and asked 6,000 adults to vote for the top 50 funniest.

The Number One slot went to Peter Kay with his joke: “I met a Dutch girl with inflatable shoes last week, phoned her up to arrange a date but unfortunately she’d popped her clogs.”

Second place on the list was one of Tommy Cooper’s finest: “Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off”

In third place was another Cooper classic: “Apparently, one in five people in the world are Chinese. And there are five people in my family, so it must be one of them. It’s either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother, Colin. Or my younger brother, Ho-Chan-Chu. But I think it’s Colin.”

In fourth was “I went to a restaurant that serves ‘breakfast at any time’. So I ordered French Toast during the Renaissance.

“Being an England supporter is like being the over-optimistic parents of the fat kid on sports day”, was in fifth place.

The top 50 list includes brilliant jokes from the likes of Peter Kay, John Bishop and Tim Vine.

Benny Hill, Ricky Gervais and Bill Bailey also appear in the ranks, along with Michael McIntyre and Russell Brand.

A spokesman for paid for survey site 2Brewarded, which commissioned the study, said: “Britain clearly has a great sense of humour.

“Many of the jokes in top 50 are from true, British comic legends.

“Gags from comedy geniuses such as Michael McIntyre, Peter Kay and Tommy Cooper are all ranked highly.

“All of the jokes that made the final list are all genuinely funny and good natured which proves crude gags don’t really cut it.”

The list had a wide range of jokes from late, great comics such as Tommy Cooper, but also modern stars like Sarah Millican and Jack Whitehall.

The array of topics reflects the timescale as well with gags about Google Plus, Facebook and Twitter all making the list.

Funny tales about marriage, famous icons and religion also cropped up in the poll while gags about families, money and food also appear in the list of our favourites.

The most popular joke about marriage turned out to be “Why do men get married? So they don’t have to hold-in their stomachs anymore.”

The favourite celebrity-based jokes revolved around Taylor Swift and her much-publicised boy troubles and the passing of Johnny Cash, Bob Hope and Steve Jobs.

Sarah Millican made the top 50 with her one-liner about mums’ double standards. A similar gag by Jack Whitehall was also highly-rated.

John Bishop, whose popularity has rocketed over the past few years, reached the top five by poking fun of the England football team.

A couple of surprise appearances in the top 10 were from Rowan Atkinson and Steve Martin, who aren’t commonly known for their stand-up performances.

A spokesman for 2Brewarded added: “It’s hard to read through these jokes without a smile on your face.”
