LABOUR is hoping an All-Ireland-winning legend can boost its election chances.
The party is to co-opt hurling great Martin Storey, who captained his county to All-Ireland glory in 1996, on to Wexford County Council, to fill the vacancy that arose from the death of Cllr Pat Cody.
The Herald recently revealed that Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin tried to persuade a top GAA figure to run for the party in next year's local elections.
Waterford hurler Tony Browne was contacted by the FF leader and was "seriously considering" the request.
The moves point to a strategy by both parties of targeting sports stars in advance of the city and county council polls next June and an expected general election in 2016.
"I would like to warmly welcome the news that Martin's name is to go forward for selection as Pat Cody's replacement on Wexford County Council," said Wexford TD and Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin.
"Pat Cody's shoes may well be difficult to fill, but I can't think of anybody better qualified to do just that than Martin Storey.
"The decision of somebody of the calibre of Martin Storey to put himself forward for a position like this is very positive news for the Labour Party."
