Bebe Steps
Bebe knows how to party. The label kicked off its latest campaign, which centers on nightlife, with an overnight soiree on Aug. 21 in Manhattan. "Bebe is all about the 9 p.m.-to-5 a.m. girl this fall," Bebe CEO Steve Birkhold told Spy. True to that theme, attendees at the celebration partied well into the morning. "It actually did go until 5 a.m.," Birkhold said. He noted that "Bebe girls" and celebrities were out in full force, as they will be an even bigger focus for the brand going forward. "Apparently word hit the street because Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Simmons both showed up to the party," the CEO added. "It was a great surprise for everyone." Other guests included Coco Rocha, Ciara, Katrina Bowden, Selita Ebanks and model Nina Adgal, who is featured in the new ad campaign.
Shoe Time
Six months after its first brush with celebrity — creating a custom shoe for Lady Gaga — Seattle-based Hourglass Footwear has made it back onto the music scene. Emerging musician Mary Lambert wore a pair of the label's hand-painted pumps at the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25 while performing "Same Love" with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. The shoes were designed with a floral pattern to match Lambert's sleeve tattoo, said Hourglass co-founder Kira Bundlie, who runs the startup with business partner and co-founder Lisa Strom. The project started when Hourglass reached out to Lambert's team after Bundlie heard an interview with the singer on the radio. "She talked about her upcoming single, 'She Keeps Me Warm,' and about her life and history, and I was struck by what a great role model she is," Bundlie said. Added Strom, "She wrote back to tell us that she loved the shoes and that we had fantastic timing. She had just found out she was going to be performing at the VMAs. We created mid-heels and matching flats for her, so she could [change into] whichever was more comfortable. She wore the flats on the red carpet and the heels on stage." Although they didn't share details, the co-founders said more celebrity shoe projects are on the horizon.
Photo Finish
Miista founder and designer Laura Villasenin has worked with London-based fashion photographer Phillip Meech for past lookbooks, and for spring '14, they took their collaboration to the next level. Meech, who is known for his work with high-end labels including Prada, Miu Miu and Saint Laurent, teamed up with Villasenin to create photographic floral prints with a dreamy, abstract twist. "The theme [for the spring collection] is 'Aqua-scapism,’" Villasenin said. "I was looking at a lot of images that made me feel very fluid, so we [photographed] a lot of different flowers under water."
